In 1982, the American Paralysis Foundation was formed. When it first started, there was not much research being done and the whole scientific field was just beginning. There was not much immediate support. However, it was because of Christopher Reeve's terrible accident in 1995, that a whole new initiative was sparked. The name was changed to the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. The main goal of the foundation is to provide funding for research. With all of the donations and support received from average citizens, the search for possible treatments and cures has been made much easier. Over the years, the foundation has funded over $64 million to scientists for different types of research.
Another part of the foundation is the Quality of Life program, which was developed by Christopher's wife, Dana Reeve. The program was created to assist people living with spinal cord injuries and make their lives easier. Over $10 million has been given to help with that effort as well.
Peter D. Kiernan, III is now watching over the foundation to make sure that everything is running as Christopher and Dana Reeve would have wanted it to. Seeing the success of the Lance Armstrong's Livestrong campaign, the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation began its own campaign selling Superman dog tags with the words "Go Forward" on them.
