In preparation for the film Anna Karenina, Christopher learned to ride horses. He was even allergic to horses, but he was so interested in them that he continued to learn. He practiced for years until taking things to the next level in 1989. Christopher was not one to back down from a challenge, so he bought his own horse named Buck, and began to enter riding competitions. He got better and better until one disastrous day.
On May 27, 1995, as Christopher made his way through the course, Buck refused to make one of the fence jumps. The horse stopped quickly and rose up causing Christopher to fall off very quickly. He hit the ground very hard, which damaged spine. From then on, he was paralyzed from the neck down for the rest of his life. In the years that followed the accident, he encountered many health complications that made his life much more difficult. At one point he even considered suicide as an option. However, with love and support from his family and friends, Christopher decided to work through his injury and use what he had left to positively contribute to society.
